When we released Volume II: Colour in Autumn 2017, we did so without an official collective name. We went unnamed for almost two years, before we finally came up with the name One of Us, to reflect the things we aim to showcase in our self-funded publication: inclusivity; diversity; the highlighting of the oft unseen, untold, and underrepresented; and our shared love of the classic Simpsons episodes (which are, btw, peppered throughout our entire issue… even our name came from an obscure line from The Simpsons).
We’re all Canadians, and we wanted to produce a magazine that is made up of mostly Canadian content. We’ll aim to have one international feature per issue, but we lamented the lack of beautiful, collectible, Canadian-born magazines out there… so we created one. We want you to treat every issue of ours like a book you buy yourself every year or so. Every single issue will have a different theme.
Though this issue will be our third volume, this issue is our first publication under our newly-named collective. Cosmos/Benthos features a collection of short fiction, essays, photographs (tonnes of photographs), illustrations, and lots of recipes that explore our relationship with and our interpretation of both the cosmos and various bodies of water. In essence, we are an indie Food, Stories, and Art publication.
One of Us is a printed annual produced by three best friends and creatives: designer and illustrator, Monograph&Co.; food/editorial photographer, Issha Marie; and food/lifestyle photographer, Alison Page. The three of us work on both our individual practices as well as collaborate together on some client accounts. This printed annual was conceived out of a mutual desire to put together a wholly self-directed production that showcases our strengths as creatives.
